Riverdale’s Return Pulls Good Numbers, But It’s No Help For Dynasty’s Debut

It’s strike two on new series over at the CW. Riverdale’s return showed that the network was wise to renew the Archie Comics adaptation, but a big chunk of the viewers bailed before the reboot of Dynasty began. This is the other new series the network debuted this week to less than stellar ratings.

Riverdale season 2

The Riverdale season 2 premiere numbers were up, making the move to Arrow old time slot (Wednesday 8 PM) seem like a good call. The episode pulled in series high numbers of 2.3 million viewers and a 0.8 rating with the 18-49  group. That up 67% in viewers and 60% in demo over the series debut back in July on a Thursday night at 9 PM (Where Arrow has ended up). It also posted a 467% increase in teen viewers, winning the night in that demographic and the highest rated telecast in the teen demo in five years since The Vampire Diaries October 11, 2012. It was also up double digits on the series average and triple digits over the season finale. It also beat last years Arrow season 5 premiere (1.9 million, 0.7).

Riverdale got an early renewal even though the ratings were soft. But delayed viewing was strong, averaging 113% lift with the Live+7 numbers. The series was also made available on Netflix over the summer, allowing new viewers to find it and binge the season. The interesting thing will be to see if this was just the standard audience all tuning in because of the cliffhanger or if the audience has indeed grown.

It wasn’t all good news though as almost a million viewers turned the channel before the debut of the networks reboot of Dynasty. Attracting 1.3 million viewers and only a 0.4 in the 18-49 demo, the show only kept about half of it’s lead in, but was surprisingly on part with the original Riverdale series premiere and up a tenth from last years new Wednesday at 9 PM series, Frequency, that lasted only 13 episodes. Neither Frequency nor the Riverdale pilot had quite the lead in that Dynasty had.

These numbers are slightly better than the disappointing debut of Valor on Monday, but not what the network was hoping for a reboot with name recognition.
