Supercon is the comic con organisation that has been causing ructions in the comic convention marketplace.
Established in South Florida back in 2006, it has run the Florid Supercon, Animate Florida, and Paradise City Comic Con. But in 2017 it’s crossing state lines, and seems to be following the old Wizard World model in terms of branding and expansion.
For this year, it has taken over the dates that Wizard World abandoned for Wizard World Comic Con Raleigh. July 14th-16th, now the first year of the Raleigh Supercon, at the same convention centre that, in March, hosted the Raleigh NC Comicon in March, which has been running for three years. NCcomicon has a more established show in November, in Durham.
Wizard pulled those dates partly because they didn’t want to compete with other shows, but Supercon doesn’t seem to have that problem. And by scheduling so close to Heroescon in North Carolina, this past weekend, appears to have split the audience. Vendors at Heroescon reported sales and attendance down this year.
After Raleigh Supercon, Supercon’s next show is Florida Supercon, running from July 27th to 30th, a couple of months before MegaCon in Tampa — and the week after the monster that is San Diego Comic-Con. Already there is heavy competition for guests and exclusive deals being bandied about…
You know what this means? Comic Con Wars! And you thought those had ended a decade ago. But with more and more shows and more and more expansions, there will be more and more clashes…
Who will sign exclusive to whom? Will the fans reward one but punish the other? Will the North Carolina scene become as intense and insane as those folks in Phoenix, Arizona?
Feels just like a noughties revival, doesn’t it? Let’s all go read copies of The Authority in the sun.
