James Gunn is in a unique position when it comes to filmmakers working with Marvel Studios. Introducing his own take on the Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t require any lead-ins or connections to previous or upcoming films, and the cosmic setting allows for almost unlimited potential. The caveat there is that Marvel Studios can’t use many characters and alien races from the comics due to other studios owning the licenses to them.
