"I received an 'interest' on Date.com from someone with the screen name "edmustang67". The name grabbed me because, growing up, my dream car was a 1967 Mustang! I knew that I had to at least respond, and it was worth my time to check him out! We started writing back and forth and instant messaging for about two weeks. He just seemed like a nice "regular" guy. I had been out on a dates, but didn't feel any connections with anyone. I also found that most of the guys I met were focused on money, or looks or being "players". Eddie was a "REAL" person. He too had "war wounds" but didn't carry them around like luggage like so many others tend to do.
After about two weeks of internet chat, Eddie asked if it was okay for us to speak on the phone. I was surprised and pleased by his gentlemanly politeness. He gave me his number and said that I could call him if I wanted. I was going on a 6-hour road trip that weekend and told him I would call from the road.
I called him on my long, lonely ride home and got his voicemail. I left a friendly message hoping he would call back that night. Instead, he called me the next afternoon. For the next 4 days, we spoke 2 or 3 times a day until he said, "So, when do I get to see your face in person?"! This was after he asked if it was really my picture that I had posted on Date.com . I was a little surprised by this question and answered, "Yes, of course it is, why would you ask?" And he said, "Well, I spoke to two other girls and they both told me that it was not their own picture on the website!" I assured him that it was indeed me!
We planned to meet that Friday night at Happy Hour. I had planned to go to a place on the water on Long Island, where we live, with some friends, and asked if he wanted to meet me. The plan was set, we would meet in person! He was already there when my friends and I arrived by boat. I knew that he was very tall, 6'5" to be exact. I had seen his picture but you can't tell exactly what a person looks like from a picture. As we pulled in to the dock, I saw a very large, rather doofy looking guy standing on the dock. I panicked, this guy I saw did not really look like the picture that I saw, and certainly did not look like a guy that I would go for! I decided to call Eddie's cell phone. I thought, if the guy on the dock answers, I will simply NOT get off the boat, and make up some lame excuse to cancel! Thankfully, when Eddie answered his phone, the guy on the dock was not the person on the other end!
After several phone calls back and forth, we managed to find each other among the huge happy hour crowd! I walked up to him and I said, "Are you looking for me?" He just smiled this great, big smile and said, "I hope so....hi, I'm Ed". And that was it. We talked for hours, he met my sister and my friends, I met his friend (he brought along a "wingman" just in case!) we all got along great. My sister did grill him a little bit, as sisters tend to do, but he was unfazed. We laughed a lot and found out that we had many things in common. As the night came to an end, he said that he would call me tomorrow. For the first time in my life, I didn't worry, I KNEW that he would call. We went out alone the next night and have been inseparable ever since!
He proposed to me just a month ago, while we were in Jamaica for a friend's wedding. He did all the right things. He asked my parents permission, he got a hold of the exact antique ring that I had tried on months before, and he even managed to hide it in our carry-on bag!
Many hours after the wedding in Jamaica, and after getting permission from the newlyweds, he got down on one knee in front of a crowd of people and popped the question! My hands were shaking, the ring didn't quite fit, but it was a wonderful, magical moment and it made our trip to Jamaica even more special, something I will never forget! I am working on getting video of the whole thing taken by one of the guests at the wedding. Apparently, they all knew about this too! This was the first time I was the only one not "in on it'! We are planning a September wedding and I have never been happier in my life! Thank you Date.com!!!"
